Senior Staff Accountant

Location: Minneapolis, MN (Hybrid)

Department: Finance

Responsible for performing accounting duties and serving as the lead staff person responsible for the execution of the accounting functions in accordance with GAAP. This role has a substantial impact on both the day-to-day finance and long-term strategic direction for the organization, providing financial analysis, short and long-term planning, and expertise to strengthen the organization’s financial position.

Specific duties include:

  • Compiles all accounts payables and receivables, recording transactions and accruals, and preparing payment of invoices.
  • Performs general ledger reconciliations, research variances, and makes corrections, as necessary.
  • Makes weekly bank deposits and completes monthly bank credit card reconciliations.
  • Verifies all transactions comply with organization policies, approved budgeted expenses, and best practices.
  • Collaborates on quarterly and year-end closings, annual audit preparation, 990 filing preparation, and revenue reconciliations with the National ACLU.
  • Works with the Director of Finance to identify and articulate operational strategic issue priorities.
  • Contributes to the strategic planning process and implementation of the plan.
  • Provides analytical support to the senior management team including the development of internal reporting capabilities and making recommendations on organizational fiscal decisions.
  • Ensures compliance, the integrity of information, and strategic decision-making by analyzing various financial aspects including expense reports, budgets and forecasting, internal controls, cost analysis, and financial statements.
  • Provides the financial, accounting, and budgeting support needed for fundraising activities.
  • Manages the processing of payroll, including calculation of wages, deductions, and benefits. Additionally, oversee the submission of retirement contributions.
  • Analyzes benefit options and recommends cost-effective solutions that align with organizational needs.
  • Ensures proper internal controls and processes to maintain accuracy and transparency in financial reporting.
  • Manages and reports on financials related to grants and government funding ensuring compliance with funding requirements.
  • Collaborates with department heads to assess financial needs and provides recommendations for cost control and revenue enhancement.
  • Oversees and implements internal financial controls to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Ensures financial practices comply with GAAP, tax regulations, and other financial guidelines affecting nonprofit organizations.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field. Must have 5 years of progressive, post-Bachelor’s experience in an accounting or bookkeeping role.

Must have at least 4 years of experience with the following:

  • Experience in non-profit accounting (501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4)), including fund accounting and non-profit audits.
  • Experience with non-profit accounting software, including Sage Intacct, and with non-profit reporting requirements.
  • Experience coordinating the flow of information to and from staff who possess varying degrees of financial and program experience.

Salary Range: $54,000 - $77,250 per year
