Director of People and Culture

Jim oversees HR, and is charged with building a thriving organizational culture centered around EDIB, developing staff talents, and helping ACLU-MN fight for systemic change and racial justice both internally and externally. Previously he worked as Minneapolis city attorney and at Target as vice president, general counsel employee and labor relations. At Target he recruited and retained a highly diverse team, and led the effort to remove questions about criminal convictions from job applications. He’s on the board at the Minnesota Justice Research Center and active on the National and Minnesota Hispanic Bar Associations. He is a past member of the ACLU-MN Board of Directors.

As past vice chair of the City of Minneapolis Workplace Advisory Commission, he helped lead the passage of workplace ordinances related to sick and safe time, minimum wage and wage theft. Jim was recognized in 2018 by Minnesota Lawyer as a Diversity and Inclusion Honoree for his work.

Jim received his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School and his Bachelor's in Political Science/History from the University of Illinois, where he played goalie on the men’s soccer team.
