Watch: Civil Liberties in the Era of COVID-19
On Thursday, April 9 The ACLU of Minnesota hosted a virtual town hall, Civil Liberties in the Era of COVID-19. The event, moderated by ACLU-MN Community Engagement Director Jana Kooren, brought together Executive Director John Gordon, Legal Director Teresa Nelson, and Policy Director Julia Decker to discuss our ongoing legal, legislative and organizing work during the COVID-19 pandemic, including:
- Efforts to penetrate the "virtual smoke-filled back rooms" of the Minnesota Legislature to ensure that our government is acting with transparency and accountability.
- Letters, statements and testimony to Minnesota officials, including Governor Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, and county sheriffs urging them to keep prison sentences from become death sentences by reducing the number of people in jails and prisons.
- Opportunities for ACLU-MN supporters to get (or stay) involved in civil rights advocacy from home.
Our staff also took questions from participants about the status and security of our civil liberties during these unprecendented times.
