SF 4176: STAR Act
The STAR Act prohibits Minnesota law enforcement from using state resources for federal immigration enforcement. It would bar prisons and jails from contracting with ICE to hold immigrants for possible deportation. Currently, there are three county jails in Minnesota that detain individuals for ICE: Freeborn, Kandiyohi, and Sherburne. Many immigrants, particularly those who are undocumented, avoid reporting crimes, cooperating with investigations, or seeking emergency services due to fear of detainment or even deportation for doing so.
The ACLU-MN will work with the NorthStar Coalition to pass this bill.
