Victories at the Minnesota Capitol in 2017

We went into the 2017 Minnesota legislative session prepared for a tough year. For the first time in over four years, the House and the Senate are controlled by a majority whose agenda we knew would include significant attacks on civil liberties. The ACLU is a nonpartisan organization and we have successful working relationships with members of all political parties, but the priorities of the state legislature made it clear that we would be on the defensive this year.

Trump's Anti-Immigration Agenda is Not Just Unconstitutional, It's Inhumane

ACLU of Minnesota summer intern Mohamed Camara is a sophomore at Sarah Lawrence College studying international relations, economics, and philosophy.About eight years ago my family sought refuge in the United States from the social and political unrest in my country, Guinea. In the early 2000s, Guinea experienced a series of violent political movements. When I was five years old, a rebel group from Liberia attacked my hometown, Macenta. My mom, my siblings, and I fled to the countryside and left everything behind. No one from my family was hurt, but many of the people who lived by the frontier died during the invasion.

Metro Transit Needs to Learn From its Mistakes

In May, a video went viral showing a Metro Transit police officer questioning a passenger, Ariel Vences-Lopez, on a light rail train about his immigration status. The video shows the officer asking “are you here illegally”, and asking if he has an ID.  The person filming the video is another passenger on the train and asks the officer “are you authorized to act as immigration police” and the officer responds “No, not necessarily.”
